On the Scrapbooking.com list server a new scrapbooker
recently asked "What is a crop?"
A "crop night" is usually a time where you work on your albums and possibly scrapbooking tools are provided. Personally I try to do some prep work at home before a crop
(see these articles on
planning and time management
and Power Planning.)
When I pay for cropping time, I want to get as much done as possible so I
always try to plan ahead. When cropping away from home, I try to have layouts
pre-planned and bring only what I need to work on those layouts. When I have a crop at my house and it is free, I
still try to do prep work so that I maximize the time that I have while my husband watches my son for me.
However, many people like to bring all of their stuff and do both the planning AND page creation
at a crop. Others use the time at a crop to create page borders or punch art designs that can be easily used by just adding pictures at a later date. At some crops there is an instructor present or consultant present to help if you have any
problems. Other crops do not have a scrapbooker there to help, you are mainly paying for
the use of a table and tools.
A "workshop" is another term that I have heard used for a crop night OR for a class OR for a crop
that has a short class it all depends on who uses the term. It is best to inquire exactly what a "workshop" entails before signing up for a workshop.
A "class" usually indicates that some type of hands-on instruction will be given and
a technique will be taught or participants will create a page in class or both. Classes, generally speaking, will be more expensive than crops.
